Water tanks have made collecting and storing water very easy. Different types of water tanks are being used for domestic and industrial purposes.
Water is invaluable for our survival. It is one thing that we just cannot do without. Approximately 75% of our body mass consists of water. We need it for drinking and for a variety of other purposes. For this reason, man has always been working on finding ways of storing and conserving water. Today, we have made huge progress in this field and have been successful in developing water storage systems to gather, supply, and conserve water even in very large quantities for industrial and agricultural use.
Water storage tanks for domestic consumption are readily available in stores. Domestic water tanks are usually called overhead tanks as they are put up above the house for ensuring availability of water in every part of the house. Polyethylene water storage tanks are one of the most economical water storage methods being used today. Such tanks can store water up to around 50,000 gallons. These tanks are light in weight but are very strong and durable.
Polyethylene water tanks are very easy to install and work with. Usually, these tanks are rotationally molded and hence they do not have any seam, which minimizes the chances of leaking. Polyethylene tanks are impact resistant and can be easily rolled into place. They do not require any special bedding or foundation and can be easily set on pavement or sand bed. Mostly, these tanks are available in dark green and black colors. UV inhibitors are added to the material of these tanks, which considerably enhances their life span.
Concrete tanks are very good for being used as large storage tanks particularly for industrial use. They are ideal for industrial use because they can be made to cater to the huge demand of an industry for water for various uses. They can either be pre-made or can be made at the site. The average lifespan of these tanks can be anywhere between 30-50 years or even more. Another advantage of concrete tanks is that they can be used above ground as well as below it. The disadvantage of these tanks is that they are quite heavy and are expensive too and so are not preferred by domestic users.
Steel tanks are also used for storing water but these tanks are used primarily as industrial water storage tanks. The main advantage of this type of tanks is their strength, durability, and capacity to hold huge quantities of water. Such tanks can be formed into a single unit or can be made in parts and then assembled together at the site for making the tank. Various types of steels are used for this purpose and they can have different types of coatings as well for protecting the tank. Large equipment and trained personnel are required for setting up these tanks for industrial use.
