There are two main types of proxies, web based and software based. For students at school they need web based proxies. A web proxy works by fetching the web page for the user. When the user surfs from the proxy site, they enter in the URL of the site they want to visit. The school sees the proxy website, but not the site they want to visit. The proxy then gets the destination site and displays it for the user.
Software based proxies are different because they are installed on the PC. Obviously students cannot install software on a PC so web based proxies are the way to go for them.
However for home users, software proxies probably are a better choice. They tend to be faster and more robust. They also tend to be much more secure.
