New Updates in the Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts Ultrasound Technology Program
San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) November 12, 2009 – The Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts, a private medical vocation institution, is unveiling its
new and improved Ultrasound Technology Program admissions procedures.
Enrollment into the prerequisite courses is now year round through the admissions office. Core program application packages will be
accepted in the weeks following their completion. For the November 9, 2010 program start date applications will be accepted September
17th through 5pm October 1, 2010. The next session will begin on August 2, 2011 and applications must be submitted between
May 16th and 5 pm May 31, 2011.
The Ultrasound Technology Program is proud to announce the addition of Essential Medical Bio-Science into the prerequisite line-up in
order for students to have a more well-rounded comprehension of human biology and general body chemistry. This course will precede
Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology to enforce the structure of the body’s function. It also provides consistency in the
San Mateo Campus with all of the programs introducing themselves with the same preliminary course.
Students also may now transfer credit from other accredited institution for three of the prerequisite courses. Upon showing proof of
completing equivalent courses with a “C” within the past 5 years, challenge exams may be taken for the following: Essential
Medical Bio-Science; Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology; and Cross-Sectional Anatomy.
GAMA’s new policy will include an opportunity for the student to observe a sonographer at a clinical site during the time of their
prerequisite courses in order to better understand the day to day activity involved in this outstanding state of the art career. This
experience will be expressed in a short essay used in the admission process for the faculty’s decision making process.
For prospective students holding a foreign degree, GAMA has an established plan for language equivalency and transcript evaluations.
Please see our website for a suggested list of accepted evaluating companies. Foreign degree applicants must also bring proof before
admission into the ultrasound program of successful completion of an ESL class equal to ESL 26/ English 1A (Foothill – De Anza community
college system) or to successfully pass TOEFL test with the following minimum scores: 560 for the PBT (paper-based test); 220 for the
CBT (computer-based test); and 87 for the iBT (internet-based test).
With an upgraded, state-of-the-art scan laboratory, students now have the rare opportunity to increase their skills from one of eight
ultrasound systems, including a Toshiba Nemio, an Ultrasonix, two Siemens Ellegras, an Acuson Aspen, an Acuson Sequoia 512, Medison SA
4D Live Ultrasound Systems, and a MedSim Ultrasound Training Simulator. The equipment is used in instructional scanning sessions with
students before they enter the clinical setting.
In order to streamline the commencement of their internship, students will have all of their immunizations complete before enrollment.
In this way students will not have to take time away from their family, jobs, nor school in order to proceed to this clinical step in
their 10th month of the program.
In addition to providing a thorough and comprehensive curriculum, the Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts provides graduate support for
those who have successfully completed the ultrasound program. Job placement opportunities are presented to recent graduates through
numerous employment searches performed by the Academy. Graduates also have access to the ultrasound lab where they can maintain their
scanning techniques.
As a leading provider of health care education, the Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts serves communities by maintaining high standards of
health care training. By providing a supportive learning environment, graduates are instilled with the confidence, skill, and experience
for success in the healthcare industry.
